Born in Pittsburgh in 1948, David Stein grew up in Western Pennsylvania. After high school, he went off to study philosophy at New York University in 1965 and later at Northwestern, where he earned an M.A. degree and met all requirements for a Ph.D. except the dissertation, which he was too perfectionist to finish.
