The Inscrutable Americans by Anurag Mathur tells the story of Gopal Kumar comes from a rich family who have been in the Hair Oil business for generations. He is a student with a good academic record, and he goes to US for his higher studies.

He ends up in the little-known town of Eversville, where he will spend a year studying at the towns university. His designated friend, Randy Wolff, welcomes him and tries to introduce him to American society and culture.

Eversville is a small town, but it ...is still America, and to the boy from a remote town in Madhya Pradesh, it is a strange land that he cannot understand, starting from the language. His first reaction on landing in America is the thought that the country is full of Americans and they are everywhere - big and white".

In a letter to his brother, he complains about the language and his inability to understand it, which results in embarrassing situations.
Similar to all good Indian boys going to western countries, he promises to stay away from wine, meat, and women. However, he eventually succumbs to temptation.

The Inscrutable Americans was first published in 1991, before the Internet era. Some of the statements of Gopal, such as We have only one channel, while in America he has a wide choice of channels to choose from, might seem dated. The concept of a naive lad from a remote corner of India coming to America, trying to understand it first, and then trying to blend in with the new place still appeals to many readers. The Inscrutable Americans was made into a movie in 1999
